On September 19, ANFAIA brought students, mentors and members of the public together at the Casa Galega da Cultura in Vigo to share the results of its Summer Scholarships 2026. The event rounded off two months of research, experimentation and learning during which four students developed artificial intelligence projects addressing real-world problems.
ANFAIA president Ismael Faro opened the gathering with a talk about the programme’s purpose and the lessons learned from this edition. Beyond achieving a technical result in just two months, the scholarships aim to teach participants how to research, experiment and work at the frontier of artificial intelligence, while also developing their ability to direct, evaluate and control these tools.
In his address, Faro gave special recognition to everyone who makes the programme possible: the members of the ANFAIA Mentor Network, who support scholarship recipients as they develop their projects; the professionals who deliver the summer talks, an essential part of their training; and the organisations that support and sponsor the initiative.
The four scholarship recipients then presented their projects, explained the challenges they had chosen to tackle, and shared both their progress and the difficulties they encountered along the way.
After each presentation, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and explore the proposals’ applications, the technical decisions behind them and their potential for further development.
The projects reflect the wide range of fields in which artificial intelligence can be applied:
All projects are released under the Apache 2.0 licence, with their source code openly available so that others can study them, use them and contribute to their development.
Mentors David Ibáñez Cerdeira, Sergio Carracedo Martínez and David García Selfa also spoke at the event, sharing their experiences supporting the scholarship recipients and reflecting on how the projects evolved throughout the summer.
Their contributions highlighted the importance of mentoring, shared learning and direct contact with professionals who help participants test ideas, make technical decisions and move forward through the challenges of research.
Throughout the programme, the students were supported by a network of 17 mentors and other professionals who delivered specialist talks. Their dedication was a fundamental part of the learning experience.
The ANFAIA Summer Scholarships start from a simple idea: identify a real-world problem and use artificial intelligence to solve it, drawing on AI throughout the process. This involves research, designing system architectures, building working environments with agents, experimenting with recent models and critically analysing their results.
The closing event celebrated the progress made while also creating space to share questions, lessons learned and paths still to be explored. This open approach makes each project a starting point for others to learn, replicate the proposals or help improve them.
At ANFAIA, we would like to thank the four scholarship recipients for their effort and commitment, the mentors and speakers for their dedication, and everyone who joined us at the event.
The ANFAIA Scholarships 2026 were made possible by the support of the Centro de Supercomputación de Galicia (CESGA), Histora and GESTIONTICKETS.ONLINE.
The projects are available on ANFAIA’s GitHub, and the programme’s talks can be watched on ANFAIA’s YouTube channel.
